York is a historic walled city with two rivers that meet with each other: Ouse and Foss and a population of 13,000 inhabitants. York is a small city. Four days is enough to see the major sights although it is a city that reveals its charms to explorers with curiosity and patience. It is known as England's "City of Festivals" as there are regular cultural festivals every year. The official festivals are the Viking Festival, the Festival of Angels, Early Music, Late Music, Horse Racing, Multicultural Food and Arts, Chinese New Year, Mystery Plays, Christmas St Nicholas' Fair and the Food and Drink Festival. It's a romantic city for a weekend break and a wonderful place to bring children.

York Minster is the cathedral of York and it is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe and the second-highest office of the Church of England.

- Skeldergate Bridge was raised on March 14, 1955, from the St. Georges Field side of the river, to enable workers to carry out maintenance work.

- Clifford's Tower set on a tall mound in the heart of Old York, this imposing tower is almost all that remains of York Castle, which was originally built by William the Conqueror. It is the result of Roman and Viking construction. 

- Jorvik Museum  is a museum and visitor attraction. 

St. Mary's Abbey was once the largest and richest Benedictine establishment in the north of England 

- The Shambles is an old street with overhanging timber-framed buildings, some dating back as far as the fourteenth century.

- York Dungeon  is a tourist attraction of history of the dungeon using actor shows, special effects and displays of models and objects.

 

CURIOSITIES:
The Theatre Royal, which was established in 1744, produces an annual pantomime which attracts loyal audiences from around the country to see its veteran stars. Voted as a top 10 European Destination for food and wine, York is a renowned foodie heaven.
