DESCRIPTION:
It is a city in the South East England and the county town of Oxfordshire. With a population of 150,200 it is the 52nd largest city in the United Kingdom. It was known as "Oxenaforda", meaning "Ford of the Oxen"; fords were more common than bridges at medieval time. One of the most famous radio stations is BBC Oxford operated by the British Broadcasting Corporation which also broadcasts internationally and Heart Thames Valley the local radiostation that broadcasts to Berkshire, Oxfordshire, north Hampshire and parts of west Buckinghamshire.
Popular newspapers: The Oxford Times is a weekly newspaper, published each Thursday and Oxford Mail is published six days a week.
Two famous writers who lived or attended Oxford:
- Oscar Wilde: was a writer and a poet.

- J. R. R. Tolkien: writer, poet, philologist, and university professor.

DON'T FORGET:

Bodleian Library is the main research library of the University of Oxford. It is one of the oldest libraries in Europe, and in Britain is second in size with over 11 million items.

Carfax Tower is considered to be the centre of the city. "Carfax" derives from the French carrefour "crossroads" or quatre-face "four-face"

University Church St Mary the Virgin  is the largest of Oxford's churches and the centre from which the University of Oxford grew. It is situated on the north side of the High Street, and is surrounded by university and college buildings.

Botanic Garden  is an historic botanic garden that was founded in 1621 as a physic garden growing plants for medicinal research. Today it contains over 8,000 different plant species on 1.8 hectares.

Clarendon Building is a landmark building owned by the University of Oxford. It was built between 1711 and 1715 to house the Oxford University Press. It stands in the centre of the city in Broad Street, near the Bodleian Library and the Sheldonian Theatre.

Sheldonian Theatre was built from 1664 to 1668 after a design. It's used for music concerts, lectures and university ceremonies, but not for drama.

Oxford University is a collegiate research university. The University is made up from a variety of institutions, including 38 constituent colleges and a full range of academic departments which are organised into four Divisions.
