DESCRIPTION:

Edinbrugh is the capital city of Scotland, situated in Lothian on the southern shore of the Firth of Forth with a population of 778,000 inhabitants. The river that passes by this city is called Lee. Edinburgh is rich in associations with the past and has many historic buildings, including Edinburgh Castle, Holyrood Palace, the churches of St. Giles, Greyfriars and the Canongate, and an extensive Georgian New Town built in the 18th century. Edinburgh's Old Town and New Town are jointly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

- Edinburgh Castle  is a historic fortress which dominates the skyline of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland from its position on the Castle Rock. Archaeologists have established human occupation of the rock since at least the Iron Age.

- Calton Hill is a hill in central Edinburgh, Scotland, situated beyond the east end of Princess Street and included in the city's UNESCO World Heritage Site. Views of, and from, the hill are often used in photographs and paintings of the city.

- National Gallery have a group of paintings by Jacopo Bassano, Van Dyck and Giambattista Tiepolo.

- Scottish Mining Museum was created in 1984, to preserve the physical surface remains of Lady Victoria. The Museum developed collections, such as a library, and exhibitions.

- Royal Botanic Garden is a scientific centre for the study of plants, their diversity and conservation, as well as a popular tourist attraction. Originally founded in 1670 as a physic garden to grow medicinal plants, today it occupies four sites across Scotland, Edinburgh, Dawyck, Logan and Benmore each with its own specialist collection.

- St Giles cathedral is the principal place of worship of the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Giles, who is the patron saint of Edinburgh.

- Sir Walter Scott Monument is a Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. It is the largest monument to a writer in the world. It stands in Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh.

 

CURIOSITIES:
"Edin", the root of the city's name, comes from a Celtic origin. Edinburgh has many museums and libraries. These include the National Museum of Scotland, the National Library of Scotland, National War Museum, the Museum of Edinburgh, Surgeons' Hall Museum, the Grand Lodge of Scotland Museum and Library, and the Museum of Childhood and there is also a zoo.
